Two Weaving Studios: Glenwood Springs, Colorado & Whitchurch, UK

One studio is 30+ years old and the other studio is 200+ years old. One studio weaves with cotton and wool and the other studios weaves with silk. Both produce beautiful fabrics in stunning colors. The Art on 8th weaving studio in Glenwood Springs is a vocational program operated by Mountain Valley Development Services for adults that receive their services. It began in 1988 when an Aspen family donated three looms to Mountain Valley Developmental Services.

The Whitchurch Silk Mill was built in 1813 by Henry Hayter as an iron foundry. In 1833 it was converted to a weaving business with manually operated looms. After a decline in the silk industry in the1860’s, the business recovered and mechanical looms, powered by water, were installed in the 1920’s. The mill continued weaving silk for Burberry raincoat linings, academic gowns, legal gowns, and royal attire until it was acquired by the Hampshire Buildings Preservation Trust and refurbished to become a working museum.
